Grades 5-8

The projects on this page are most appropriate for Grades 5 - 8 students. However, that does not mean they cannot be used for any other grade, depending on the circumstances of your particular classroom. Projects can be found for various content areas; some have been listed in more than one content area.


ART     
Abstract Expressionism - PPT Webquest: Students research and make an argument to rebuild a fictitious wing of an art museum that has been burned down. Students learn about Abstract Expressionism in art as well as writing skills in preparation of their argument.

All That Jazz - A Webquest (zipped file; click on to the PPT) that teaches students about the history of jazz and some of its "greats." Also appropriate for social studies.


SOCIAL STUDIES/HISTORY
Ancient Civilizations - Activity sheet (xlsx) on ancient civilizations: Mayan, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, Roman , Greek, Chinese 

US Giants - By researching various famous historical figures in the history of the United States, students find famous quotes and then use them in different contexts, such as a press release about that famous person. Students also use writing skills, which includes citation skills. 

The Oregon Trail - This spreadsheet (xls) activity can be used along with a history unit about the Oregon Trail.

The World Oil Crisis - In this Webquest (ppt) students learn about  the oil crisis and, after conducting research about oil, write a letter to the president of the US advising h/her of this crisis and what can be done about it.

Spanish/Hispanic Culture - In this Webquest (zipped file; click onto webquest.doc) students learn about Hispanic history, culture, and contributions to American society. 

Energy Use - In this PPT presentation students learn about various sources of energy and how to save energy through sustainable efforts. Also has a link to the movie, "An Inconvenient Truth." 

Goods Across America - In this Webquest (.doc) students create a brochure for various parts of the US and what goods are produced in that area. 

SCIENCE 
Our Solar System - A webquest (ppt) about our solar system. 

Rocks and Minerals - This Webquest (ppt) teaches students about rocks and minerals found in everyday household items. Students complete a spreadsheet as well as create a poster as part of this Webquest. 

Animals of the Six Biomes - In this Webquest (.doc; .docx) students research and write about an animal found in one of the six biomes found around the world. All reports are then put into a newspaper article.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Poets - In this Webquest (.doc) students learn about five types of poetry and then write a poem in one of those five styles/types.
